A group of American Baptists who tried to take 33 Haitian ‘orphans’ out of the stricken country face charges of kidnapping after it was revealed that many of the children have family members who are still alive.
The group of ten, comprised of five men and five women work for a Idaho-based charity called New Life Children’s Refuge and have been accused of trying to abduct the children without government permission or the correct papers.
Max Bellerive, Haiti’s prime minister said: “It is clear now that they were trying to cross the border without papers. It is clear now that some of the children have living parents.”
The country’s justice minister and a lawyer for the Americans said there was a possibility that they could be returned to the US and more than likely face jail time there.
